One of the most available, most misunderstood and certainly the most misidentified of all antiques are photographs. It would be difficult to find an antique dealer who has not at one time or another bought and sold 19th century photographs, yet, the average dealer would be hard pressed to correctly identify or date the different types of photographic images they routinely encounter. This exploded view of the anatomy of a photographic case shows the various levels of the image side of the case. All images courtesy Dr. Anthony J. I bought my first 19th century photograph in on a farm in Pennsylvania, out of a barn that housed ducks and doubled as an antique shop. I was fascinated by the idea that antique images were a small window into the past; I have collected photographs ever since. To fund this newly acquired habit I would scour our New York City neighborhood with my red wagon and collect discarded furniture, glassware, artwork, and textiles, which I sold on the weekends at the 26th Street Flea Market in Manhattan.

Each single image was precious — and painstaking to create. Before the film era and way before the digital era, photographic emulsions were made on glass supports, known as glass plate negatives. Two types of glass plate negatives exist: the collodion wet plate invented by Frederick Scoff Archer, in use from the s, and the silver gelatin dry plate created by Dr. Richard L. Maddox, in use from the s. The wet plates were hand coated by photographers. Both processes are still in use by fine art photographers, for their great tonal range and detail, but back in the day they were commonplace for news photography.

Starting in the s, collodion, a flammable liquid, was spread on a glass support, or plate, then placed into a bath of silver nitrate which turned the collodion into a photosensitive silver iodide. This process, including exposure and processing, had to happen immediately before the plate dried. While the wet collodion process had a five-minute exposure time before the plate dried, the dry-plate negative allowed photographers to prepare their negatives in advance and develop images long after exposure.

Existing plate glass negatives are extremely fragile, requiring special storage conditions and handling by trained staff. The emulsions can be easily scratched or slip from the glass.

The base of a bottle typically only has one primary function besides helping hold the bottle together and that is to provide a flat surface for the bottle to stand upright. The following is from the British Glass website and explains it at least in part:. Bottle bottoms aren’t flat because they need an arched structure to allow them to be stable on a flat surface.

Norman Baker, who owned the hospital, claimed to have found a cure for cancer. But there is no evidence his concoction ever cured anyone. According to Eureka Springs lore, in the hospital morgue, Baker had rows of jars full of samples of tumors that had been removed from patients. A full-page advertisement in the hospital’s magazine included pictures of the jars. All specimens are preserved in alcohol. The bottles in the advertisement look a lot like the bottles buried behind the year-old Crescent Hotel.

Baker was convicted of mail fraud in and his hospital closed, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture. He spent three years in the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan. Baker died in Keith Scales, who leads ghost tours at the Crescent, said officials were told that subsequent owners of the building took all of Baker’s specimen bottles to the dump in the s. He thought that meant a landfill near Berryville, but apparently it meant a dump behind the building.

Susan Benson, the Crescent Hotel’s “landscape artist,” uncovered the “bottle dump” Feb. State police officers determined that it wasn’t a crime scene or burial site, Evans said. More than 20 of the bottles contain what appears to be tissue.

There are two basic types of glass plate negatives: collodion wet plate and gelatin dry plate. Using glass and not paper as a foundation, allowed for a sharper, more stable and detailed negative, and several prints could be produced from one negative. The photographer, however, was on the clock: the wet plate process, including exposure and processing, had to happen before the collodion emulsion dried. Collodion wet plate negatives characteristically have uneven emulsion coatings, and thick glass with rough edges.

Occasionally, the photographers thumb will be visible on the corner or edge of the plate from holding the plate while coating it in the collodion emulsion. Silver gelatin-coated dry plate negatives, on the other hand, were usable when dry and thus more easily transported, and required less exposure to light than the wet plates. Invented by Dr. Richard L. Maddox and first made available in , dry plate negatives were the first economically successful durable photographic medium.

Dry plate negatives are typically on thinner glass plates, with a more evenly coated emulsion. Dry plate glass negatives were in common use between the s and the late s. Benjamin A. Man Ray American, – Judging from his inclusion of this image in other photographic compositions, Man Ray must have considered Tears one of his most successful photographs. A cropped version of it with a single eye also appears as the first plate in a book of his photographs. Like the emotive expression of a silent screen star in a film still, the woman’s plaintive upward glance and mascara-encrusted lashes seem intended to invoke wonder at the cause of her distress.

The face belongs to a fashion model who cries tears of glistening, round glass beads; the effect is to aestheticize the sentiment her tears would normally express. Man Ray made this photograph in Paris around the time of his breakup with his lover Lee Miller, and the woman’s false tears may relate to that event in the artist’s life. Daniel Wolf, Inc.
